Words. When Coley Porter Bell opened a new office in Cape Town it leveraged the fact that its parent company is situated in London to offer the SA market “Local talent, International flair”. The task was to create a brand environment with a local flavour while retaining elements of CPB’s British heritage.
The company’s positioning statement is “We make brands beautiful”. That is, it promises clients work that is beautifully thought, beautifully executed and beautifully effective. It applied these principals to create a beautifully functional working environment that would showcase the brand to prospective clients, employees and the media.
The delight is in the details. They added many unique touches to the interior to bring the brand to life. A Heath Nash Light made from recycled materials reminds Coley Porter Bell staff and clients to be beautifully original in any colour they like as long as it’s green.
Ruby Bridges was the first African American child to attend a white school in the Southern United States. The six-year-old girl did so in the face of jeering, missile-throwing mobs and she and her family had to endure considerable, ongoing hardship in order to get her a decent education. She is determination. The image is based on Norman Rockwell painting and was created by 15-year-old Cape Town graffiti artist Gabriel Hope. The balloon in Ruby’s hand was added as a reminder that, no matter how tough the going gets, it’s always important to make space for a little fun.
Coley Porter Bell created The Cape Town Underground based on the original 1939 London Tube map. It symbolizes the fusion of culture between the company’s Cape Town and London offices. Paul Smith inspired wall-paper designed in CPB colours is a further reference to the company’s British heritage.

Great post TAND! And a beautiful office. Wow. It just looks so light and refreshing. I love the video entry too. It would be nice to see more agencies provide a description like these people have as to the thought behind the design of their work environment. The picture of the girl with the balloon reminds me of one of my favourite pieces by Banksy. The girl with the red balloon.

Amazing company to be of service to. Coley Porter Bell is a well respected company and so dedicated and very very talented. It’s a pleasure to do retouching and finished art for Coley. Every project that Coley does always amazes me as they really “Make every brand beautifull.” Can’t wait for the next project they take on. Well done guys.
